Inflation is at an all-time high around the world. Korea is no exception. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecasts that consumer price inflation in Korea will rise 5.2% this year. While inflation is rising everywhere, it devastates low-income households with tight budgets. 

Dr. Kate Summers of the LSE (London School of Economics and Political Science) insisted that low-income households cannot cope with budget pressures compared to high-income households, making inflation more difficult.
According to a report released by the Korea Economic Research Institute in March of this year, the inflation perception rate for the bottom 20% of income earners was 1.4 times higher than for the top 20%. 

This is particularly serious for migrant workers. For migrants whose relatives rely on the money they send back, higher prices mean a double burden for families. On October 24, AP News reported on migrant workers' difficulties due to the rising cost of living in the country. According to the report, they are cutting back on living expenses, side jobs, and overtime to help their families in their home countries. "I used to save a little, about $200 a week. Now I can barely save $100 a week. I live daily," said Carlos Huerta, a 45-year-old Mexican who works as a driver in New York City. Nugu, 49, a Filipino worker in Cyprus, has been cutting his grocery bills these days to save 200 euros a month for his family. However, he says that Filipino families are also struggling with rising prices.

At the 2022 BOK (Bank Of Korea) International Conference held in June, Lee Chang-Yong, Governor of the Bank of Korea, claimed that there is a possibility that the polarization phenomenon will intensify due to high inflation. He added that there is also a possibility that low prices and low growth environments will come after the inflation subsides.

인플레이션은 저소득 가정과 이주 노동자들에게 더 불리하게 작용한다

전 세계적으로 인플레이션(물가 상승)이 사상 최고치를 기록하고 있다. 한국도 예외는 아니다. 경제협력개발기구(OECD)는 올해 한국의 소비자 물가 상승률이 5.2%에 이를 것으로 전망했다. 인플레이션이 곳곳에서 상승하고 있는 가운데, 가뜩이나 빠듯한 예산을 가진 저소득층 가구는 특히 큰 타격을 받고 있다. 

LSE(런던 정치경제대학교)의 케이트 서머스 박사는 저소득 가구는 고소득 가구에 비해 예산 압박에 대처하는 능력이 적어 인플레이션에 더 영향을 많이 받는다고 주장했다. 실제로 올해 3월 한국경제연구원이 발표한 보고서에 따르면 소득 하위 20%가 느끼는 물가상승률은 상위 20%가 느끼는 것보다 1.4배 높았다. 

또한 물가 상승은 이주 노동자들에게 더욱 심각한 문제이다. 이주노동자들이 고국으로 보내는 돈에 의존하는 가족들에게, 물가 상승은 노동자들에게 이중의 부담을 의미한다. 10월 24일, AP 뉴스는 증가하는 국내 생활비로 인해 이주 노동자들이 직면한 어려움에 대해 보도했다. 그들은 고국에 있는 가족들을 돕기 위해 부업과 야근뿐만 아니라 생활비도 줄이고 있다고 한다. 뉴욕에서 운전사로 일하는 45세의 멕시코인 카를로스 우에르타는 "저는 일주일에 200달러 정도 조금 저축하곤 했습니다. 하지만 이제 일주일에 100달러도 겨우 모을 수 있어요. 저는 하루하루를 삽니다" 라고 말한다. 키프로스에 사는 필리핀 노동자(49)는 가족을 위해 매달 200유로를 절약하기 위해 요즘 식료품비를 줄이고 있다. 하지만 그는 필리핀 가정들도 물가 상승으로 어려움을 겪고 있다고 말한다.

이창용 한국은행 총재는 지난 6월 열린 2022년 BOK (Bank Of Korea) 국제컨퍼런스에서 양극화 현상이 높은 인플레이션으로 더 심화될 가능성이 있다며 이번 인플레이션이 진정된 후엔 저물가, 저성장 환경이 도래할 가능성도 있다고 밝혔다.
