Females in the political field

Over several decades, society has witnessed major turning points for equal female participation in the political field. However, the journey to equal voting rights was a challenging one. Through the numerous struggles faced by the suffragettes, women may have reached political freedom. However, political equality remains an international challenge even in today's society.

True political equality requires active political expression and genuine representation of female leaders. Due to the guarantee of voting rights, women have participated in elections and social movements, but more than merely political participation is needed. Political leadership must be achieved to incorporate representation and equality.

When examining political participation by gender, women have reached or even exceeded men's participation internationally. According to the National Election Commission, the voter turnout rate for women during South Korea's 20th Presidential election was higher (77.5%) than for men (76.8%). The Center for American Women and Politics also reported that the number of women registered to vote in the U.S. has been about 10 million more than men. Since political participation is an equal right, both men and women have been able to cast their votes.

Contrastingly, political leadership remains a continuous struggle. Political leadership allows politicians to be at the forefront of political agendas. Therefore women's voices can be appreciated as a competent contribution to society. However, only 19% of the parliament members in Korea are females. In addition, UN Women reported that just 17 countries have a women Head of state, while 19 countries have a women Head of government. This proves a clear need for more representation in political leadership roles.

True representation can only be achieved by guaranteeing political leadership. Female politicians can sympathize and comprehend the concerns of women and incorporate their experiences. However, most importantly, women leaders will be role models for future generations.
As global citizens, we must reflect upon our unconscious biases toward female politicians. Have we ever considered politics to be more suitable for men? If so, how many competent female leaders have we lost?
