Why Did Pengsoo Go Viral?
¹Ú¼­¿¬ °­³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2020.04.04 22:45

The popularity of the giant penguin “Pengsoo” is ever-increasing in South Korea. According to Chosun Ilbo, Pengsoo’s Youtube channel subscription has escalated from a single-digit number to 100,000 within six months. Between September and November, its youtube channel subscription increased to a million, then to two million by January. Reaching 2,110,000 subscribers on March 18th, Pengsoo has also been elected as “Figure of This Year,” raising above  BTS in the entertainment sector.

The surprising fact about this popularity is that the majority of its huge fans are adults. According to Chosun Ilbo, 42.3% of Pengsoo’s viewers were in their 20s, 34% in their 30s and 13.3% in their 40s. Moreover, 75.6% of Pengsoo’s viewers were female. An interview was conducted with a 20-year-old female Pengsoo fan.

Q: How did you first get to know about Pengsoo?

A: “I got to know Pengsoo through various sources such as Youtube, friends and family members, and advertisements.”

Q: Why do you like Pengsoo?

A: “I like Pengsoo partly because I love penguins, and it is fun learning about Pengsoo doing different things. I also liked him for his confidence and inspirational comments.”

Q: Is there anything Pengsoo fans and viewers can learn from Pengsoo?

A: “I think people who watch Pengsoo’s videos could learn about being sure about themselves to others. Pengsoo is a confident character who does not live on concerns, and his comments are very relatable of what we go through the relationships at workplaces and schools.”

To some viewers, Pengsoo may seem rude and ignorant in social and work hierarchy, which is seen when he calls the EBS’s CEO, his boss, without honorifics. Yet, Pengsoo may be a source of not only entertainment but also inspiration and encouragement for many introverted viewers who wish to be more outspoken and confident towards others.
