The field of archaeology does not always present in public, and this frequently leads to misconceptions about what an archaeologist does. Some people believe that archaeology involves excavating holes and looking for gold. Others think that this field is useless because there is no advantage to knowing the past. The most absurd myth would be that the ancient people were contacted by aliens to construct massive structures like the pyramids. Whatever the case is, the finding of a Silla princess' tomb will give people a new appreciation for archaeology.

The princess of Silla, whose name is still unknown to this day, was discovered in Gyeongju's tomb 44 at Jjeoksam. No bones were preserved despite her body having been underwater for a century. The silk mudguard with the jewel insects would be one of the most noticeable artifacts. Archaeologists made a novel mudguard design discovery with this one. Many pieces of jewelry discovered in her tomb, like the mudguard, were also crafted from jewel bugs. It's possible that the princess liked the green color that the jewel bugs used because of the quantity of jewel beetle patterns. The royal dynasty of Silla may have believed that these bugs had symbolic importance.

Go pieces and a small mortar have also been discovered by archaeologists. These relics can be explained by Silla's historical records. First, Silla had a strong go following. The go pieces that were discovered in connection with the location of the princess in the tomb suggest that she might have also been interested in playing the game. The little mortar was also utilized in Silla for medical purposes. This might have been buried with her in an effort to imply that she had health issues in her final years.

In conclusion, archaeology aims to understand the past through the material culture that has been preserved. Jewelry reveals the kinds of possessions individuals want to own, but there is more to the past than jewelry that reveals daily life in earlier times. As of 2023, Tomb 44's excavation was finished, and it is now accessible to the public.
