The Rise of Ultranationalism
이유진 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2023.09.17 14:44

In recent years, extreme nationalism has gained ground, raising questions about its impact on both internal stability and international relations.

Many countries saw the rise of extreme nationalist parties and groups in the elections, which worried the fall of democratic institutions. Within countries, this intensified form of nationalism often targets minority groups and political dissenters, dividing communities and stifling free debate.

Critics argue that such division erodes democratic principles by labeling any opposing views as "unpatriotic," essentially shutting down any healthy discussion. Internationally, the rise in extreme nationalism complicates diplomatic efforts and undermines global cooperation.

Nations operating under a nationalist agenda are less likely to work together on pressing issues like climate change or public health crises and also could leave or halt any global cooperation and alliances between neighboring nations. This go-it-alone approach not only strains international relations but also risks making global problems harder to solve.

In summary, extreme nationalism is troubling for both national unity and international collaboration. Its growth should serve as a warning bell for those who value democratic norms and global stability. To address this, society needs to focus on educating citizens about the dangers of divisive nationalism and promote a more inclusive sense of national identity.
