The more people interested in computer science, the more people learn about computer languages to create new programs. Charles Babbage was not the first to develop a computer programming language, but the history of computer programming languages started with him. Charles Babbage made a device and Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer programming language.
In 1949, Assembly was introduced to simplify machine code language. In 1952, Alick Glennie developed Autocode, the first computer programming language. According to HP Tech Takes, in 1957, John Backus created Fortran, a programming language for scientific, mathematical, and statistical projects. A year later, Algol, “Algorithmic Language”, was introduced. It has a simpler structure than Fortran. Java, C, and C++, which are extensively used today, are based on Algol.
Cobol, a Common Business-Oriented Language, was introduced in 1959. John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz advanced Basic in 1964, making it easier for beginners like students to understand and use computers. In 1972, C, one of the most popular programming languages today, was introduced. Later, lots of languages came out such as SQL, Matlab, C++, Haskell, Python, Java, Javascript, and C#.
Among these, Python, C, C++, Java, and Javascript are some of the most widely used programming languages today. All programming languages for computers have unique grammars and traits that make them useful in other contexts.
