Do Schools have a Good Classroom Culture?

A classroom culture with a sense of belonging is very important to establish a more inclusive environment for students. To create a good environment for all students, students must perform various actions and most importantly, they must follow the values in their schools. This article explores if Chadwick International, an international school located at Songdo, has an effective “classroom culture.” 

Chadwick International has different values that are called ¨core values¨ to create an inclusive environment for all students. The values are responsibility, honesty, fairness, respect, and compassion. According to the teachers at Chadwick International, practicing the core values helps students behave well during classes and apply these behaviors in the future. I visited the different classes to see if the students follow these values. Most of the students show compassion and respect to the teachers and their peers. Students help each other, avoid talking while the teacher is talking, and respect the opinions of all students while having a discussion. However, aside from these positive actions, there is a slight problem. Students tend to speak in Korean and not the most common inclusive language, English. If students don’t use English, students from different cultures and countries cannot understand and will be likely to feel excluded. 

Therefore, students and teachers could look for better solutions to support the use of inclusive language and create an inclusive community of diverse cultures in the CI community.
