Insulin Resistance

There are often sayings about people feeling tired and hungry after eating food. Insulin resistance is one of the most common conditions among people. Insulin resistance occurs when the cells in your muscles, liver, and fat do not respond well to insulin and struggle to take up glucose from your blood. Due to this issue, the pancreas produces more insulin to facilitate the entry of glucose into your cells. Before delving into details, insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that helps regulate the level of glucose in your blood. The lack of insulin can lead to diabetes.

Some of the symptoms of insulin resistance include extreme thirst or hunger, feeling empty after a meal, frequent infections and urination, and feeling more tired than usual. One of the primary causes of insulin resistance can be obesity (being overweight) or leading a sedentary lifestyle in general. Not only does being overweight cause insulin resistance, but research also shows that constant consumption of caffeine in coffee could impair insulin sensitivity, leading to insulin resistance.

Although this condition is common among adults, certain lifestyle habits and beneficial adaptations can improve their condition. Some habits include losing weight, exercising more, and taking medication to control glucose levels in your blood. Foods that are high in fiber, nutrients, proteins, vegetables, dairy, and fruit can also help improve the circulation of glucose in your blood. Recommended snacks to eat on an empty stomach can include hard-boiled eggs, as they contain a high amount of protein that can slow digestion and glucose absorption.

Other examples, such as avocado, banana, garlic, honey, and oatmeal, can help lower insulin levels. As people age, they are more likely to be diagnosed with insulin resistance compared to children or younger individuals. This is due to a decrease in physical activity, an increase in medications, the presence of coexisting illnesses, and impaired or defective production of insulin.
