The last article covered the impact of the global soccer market due to COVID-19. Leagues and tournaments halted, and even after their resumption, hyperinflated costs of the famous players have calmed down considerably by the severe deterioration of club revenues. Nonetheless, Lionel Messi, the six-time winner of Ballon d'Or and one of the best players in the history of soccer, does not seem to be affected by this industrial trend at all.

With Messi growing up from its youth program, FC Barcelona has been able to compete for the world No. 1 club for over a decade. However, to much surprise, FC Barcelona has catastrophically lost 2-8 to FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals amid conflict between the current Barcelona board and its players. Worst, Messi seems determined to leave FC Barcelona. It is the first six-point defeat the club suffered since 1951. and FC Barcelona is notifying players it wishes to ban by fax instead of telling them in person. The players are also announcing to leave without regret. With much confusion, the incident has grown into the most controversial issue in the soccer world.

The friction between the board and the players of FC Barcelona started in January of this year when the struck down former coach Ernesto Valverde, who maintained a good relationship with the squad, for performance issues, claiming to the media that the decision was rather due to the players going on strike. The situation escalated when Barcelona's former board executive Eric Abidal and Messi argued in public. While the drama stopped with Abidal's resignation, Messi has expressed his intention to leave in the historic defeat to FC Bayern Munich.

Messi initially tried to invoke a contract clause that allows him to end the contract with FC Barcelona and leave in June after a season finishes each year. However, with COVID-19 delayed the end of the Spanish league, La Liga, to August, FC Barcelona has been insisting that the clause is only valid every June, not August, and is maintaining the contract’s buy-out amount of approximately one billion USD, undoubtedly a burdensome amount and issue for Messi who wishes leave to another club while maintaining his legacy at FC Barcelona. A legal dispute, as a result, that seemed inevitable between Messi and the club does not seem to take place with Messi putting off his wish to leave until next June.

COVID-19와 축구선수 리오넬 메시

COVID-19으로 인해 전세계 축구시장은 많은 어려움에 직면해 있다. 시즌이 중단되고 재개된 후에도 리그 및 대회의 무관중 경기로 인해 각 구단들의 수익이 악화되었다. 이로 인해 그동안 부풀려져 있던 유명 선수들의 몸값이 어느 정도 조정되기도 했지만 Ballon d'Or를 6회 수상하며 역사상 최고의 선수 중 한명으로 평가받는 리오넬 메시 선수에게는 이러한 업계의 동향이 전혀 반영되는 것 같지 않다.

FC Barcelona는 메시로 인해 지난 10년 넘게 세계 1위 클럽 자리에 오를 수 있었지만 현재 메시는 바로셀로나 보드진과 마찰을 겪으면서 FC 바이에른 뮌헨에게 2-8로 UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals에서 패배를 안겨주며 클럽을 떠나겠다는 강력한 의지를 보여주고 있다. 이 경기는 1951년도 이후에 바로셀로나 구단이 겪은 첫 6점차 패배이다. 이로 인해 FC Barcelona는 대부분의 선수를 교체하겠다며 각 선수들에게 대면이 아닌 팩스로 통보를 하였고 선수단 역시 미련없이 떠나겠다고 밝혀 큰 혼란이 야기되고 있고 이는 현재 축구계에서 가장 큰 논란이 되고 있다.

FC Barcelona 구단은 선수단과 사이가 좋던 Ernesto Valverde 전 감독을 실적 문제로 올해 1월에 경질하였는데, 구단에서 추가적으로 선수단이 퇴업을 해 내려진 결정이라고 언론에 알리면서 구단과 선수단 사이에 마찰이 시작되었다. 바로셀로나 구단 선수 출신인 보드진 임원 아비달과 메시가 논쟁을 하며 대립하였고 아비달이 퇴사하며 사태가 완화되는 듯하였으나, 결국 바이에른 뮌한 구단에게 역사적인 패배를 하면서 메시가 구단을 떠나겠다는 강력한 의사 표시를 한 것이다.

메시는 계약을 취소할 수 있는 계약조항을 발동해서라도 팀을 떠나려고 했지만 COVID-19으로 인해 사실상 스페인 라리라 리그의 종료가 8월로 미루어 지면서 이 조항을 발동할 수 없게 되었으며, 바로셀로나 구단은 천문학적인 금액인 10억 달러에 달하는 이적료를 요구했다. 이는 바로세로나에서 세운 업적을 살리면서도 다른 구단으로 이적하고 싶은 메시와 그를 영입하길 원하는 구단에게는 큰 부담이 되었고 결국 메시는 내년 6월에 이적을 하겠다고 발표를 하면서 불가피해 보였던 메시와 바로셀로나 구단과의 법적 분쟁은 일어나지 않게 되었다.
