Climate Crisis vs. Energy Crisis
ÀÓ¿¬ÁØ °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2021.12.06 15:15
The sky over the past few months was clear. However, as the weather got colder and China began to heat up again, fine dust came. Fine dust is expected to increase further in the future as China, which has been trying to reduce coal, has no choice but to use coal as heating fuel again after a massive power outage.
At the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP26) held in Glasgow, England on November 14, the world’s leaders failed to reach an agreement on the end of coal development and only reached an agreement on phased reduction efforts in coal power generation without carbon reduction devices. In response to these results, Swedish youth climate activist Thunberg accused them of an agreement that ended with nothing.

There are side effects of the energy crisis lurking behind the efforts to solve the climate catastrophe. China has taken aggressive energy-saving efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. China, which relies on coal for 70% of its energy, tried to replace coal with natural gas while operating thermal power plants but faced power shortages when natural gas prices skyrocketed and Australian coal imports were halted as part of a boycott of Australian products. In the end, China strengthened its national coal mining to overcome the crisis.

This energy issue, however, is not only due to the carbon reduction agenda. More so as a result of climate change and the absence of mining of environmentally friendly energy as a result of climate change. Hydroelectric power generation in China fell due to a lack of precipitation, while wind power generation in Europe fell substantially due to a shortage of wind compared to prior years. Furthermore, due to unusually cold and hot conditions, the demand for energy for cooling and heating surged rapidly. Due to a scarcity of resources, countries have reverted to using their own fossil fuel power plants or importing natural gas from the United States or Russia, rising natural gas prices. Furthermore, rising oil and natural gas costs have boosted demand for coal, a relatively low-cost energy source. Because of the climate crisis, coal use should be reduced, but the climate crisis has forced people to increase coal production. So, governments and businesses in countries should come up with more realistic measures than dream-like goals.
