The "Age of Imperialism" in the late 1800s saw various European nations occupy sizable areas of Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. The United States joined as well in colonizing small nations. The foreign policy outlook of the founding fathers and the Age of Imperialism were comparable. The Federalists promoted the expansion of robust international trade.

Senator Mark Hanna suggests that the United States is following the law of nature to expand economically articulating “If it is commercialism to want the possession of a strategic point Philippines that gives the American people an opportunity to maintain a firm or secure position that provides a base for further advancement in the markets in China for God’s sake let us have commercialism." commercialism leads the United States to monetary gain. The United States made a route to trade with markets in China. The Jeffersonians supported the fledgling republic's growth over the huge continent it inhabited which showed they needed military advancement to expand.

The imperialists placed a strong focus on increasing their military power. Imperialism is seen in the sources as undermining the Monroe Doctrine by adopting various political stances. Although the Monroe Doctrine and imperialism both acknowledged the pre-existing colonies in the Americas, they did not agree on meddling with cultural influences. The Monroe Doctrine stressed non-intervention and non-colonization, whereas imperialism favored the colonization of little states and tiny territories. The Henry Cabot Lodge claims that to show that "the present drift is all toward the consolidation of population and land into major states," the United States had to intervene and civilize tiny nations.

The great nations are rapidly absorbing other countries for their future expansion and their present defense of all the waster places of the earth. It is a movement they are making for civilization and the advancement of the race. As one of the great nations of the world, the United States must not fall out of the line of march.” In conclusion, the Age of Imperialism matched the perspective of the founding fathers.
