Thoughts Coexist With Languages
ÀÌÀ翬 °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2023.04.15 21:53

Have you ever considered the possibility of thinking without knowing a specific language? After giving it much thought, I concluded that the tongue serves two simultaneous purposes: thinking and speaking. First, let me clarify how language affects our ideas before I get into my views.

Language significantly influences how we think because our thoughts are substantially shaped by language. For instance, several terms in the Eskimo language describe snow. Eskimo people use numerous expressions for "snow falling," "snow swept by the wind," and "snow beginning to melt." Naturally, the "snow" they picture is richer and more specific than the "snow" we imagine, and depending on the circumstance, they may see snow differently. Even though we gaze at the same snow, they and we will think differently. Here, we have discovered that as linguistic variety increases, so does the depth of thought.  Language may be compared to prison for thoughts, and we can narrow our thoughts by making the prison smaller. This should give you an idea of how much language influences our thoughts.

I'll now return to my original point and discuss why language and thought may coexist. Language itself is considered. Language and thoughts are the same. Speaking helps us share our thoughts with others. Consequently, we need someone to pay attention to while we talk.

Nevertheless, we are still being heard even when we speak to ourselves. Talking to oneself involves both speaking and listening. It consists in asking and responding to questions about oneself. We refer to this internal speaking and listening process as thinking. When you think, even when you aren't speaking aloud, you are continuously forming words in your head if you take a moment to notice this. We are simply talking and listening to ourselves when we believe. For instance, we unintentionally develop the language of "I'm hungry" in our brains when we are hungry. Even if we don't say the words aloud, we still use language in our minds. Thought is language. We are unable to think without language for this reason.
