On July 18th, Japanese world-renowned architect Tadao Ando opened the newly constructed meditation hall “The Space of Light,” celebrating the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Museum SAN in Gangwon-do, Korea.

During the lecture held on July 15th at Ewha Womans University, Ando expressed his intentions behind creating “The Space of Light,” stating, “I wanted to create a space where nature and oneself become one.” He further explained that “The Space of Light” does not have glass like the Pantheon; the light enters directly from the ceiling. As a result, it develops a strong impression of the space where nature and oneself are interconnected.”

Following the ‘Meditation Hall’ opening in January 2019, “The Space of Light” is the second meditation space located in the entrance garden of the Museum SAN. A representative from the museum indicated, “While the existing ‘Meditation Hall,’ located in a subtly visible space, gently envelops the area with its dome-shaped form, “The Space of Light” presents a geometric shape that emphasizes symmetry, creating a tense and dynamic space.” Inspired by Platonic solids, Tadao’s “The Space of Light” showcases a prominent cross-shaped light that descends from above.

Furthermore, the space evokes a reminiscent atmosphere of light, similar to the experience one encounters through the cross-shaped window on the wall in “The Church of Light:” Tadao’s most representative work. Both designs skillfully incorporate the permeation of light, representing his architectural style of integrating natural elements and the concept of emptiness.

With the opening of “The Space of Light,” visitors to the Museum SAN can now immerse themselves in Tadao’s architectural masterpiece, experiencing the profound harmony between nature and the human spirit within this enchanting meditation space.
