Can Google's Bard Overtake the Currently Dominant ChatGPT?
ÀÌ½Âºó °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2023.08.15 20:41

Boasting a fanbase of over 100 million users as of June 2023, ChatGPT is the single most widely used platform in the world. Ever since its release to the public by OpenAI, it immediately struck code red for Google, which has been the monopoly of the search engine market. Several months later, Google released a glimpse of Bard, a language model just like ChatGPT but with a sprinkle of Googliness in it to duel the dominance of ChatGPT. Will Bard surprise everyone and overtake ChatGPT?

In order to discuss who will be the winner of this discussion, we first have to understand the capability and restrictions of each model(Bard and ChatGPT 3.5-a free tier of ChatGPT). ChatGPT is a specially tweaked version of OpenAI’s Generative Pre-training Transformer 3 (GPT-3) and is trained with datasets only until the end of 2021: limiting the latest world issues and research. On the other hand, Bard's biggest asset over ChatGPT is access to the internet without a paid subscription. For instance, if you ask each model "What is today's weather?" to each model, only Bard would be able to answer that through the internet. The UI and adaptability and integration of the model's responses to our usages should also be considered.

I think Google has done a fabulous job in this aspect, utilizing its well-known homemade services like Google Colab and Gmail to migrate Bard's response since almost everyone does not spend a day without exposure to Google's apps or services. ChatGPT, however, naturally is limited because it is an external service. Despite these drawbacks, Openai certainly has great potential, opening our eyes as to how it can threaten a monopoly like Google and receive a record of over 100 million dollars in funding from Microsoft to continue improving ChatGPT. Still, not only does Bard currently have the upper edge in terms of performance, its potential is unparalleled, especially with the sheer number of bright workforce of software engineers and researchers to exponentially improve the model.
Overall, while Bard has to overcome the challenge of how to market and advertise and convince the general public, I believe that Bard will eventually be the winner in this race.
