Hwang Hee Chan's goal celebration during Korea vs. Portugal's 2022 World Cup match attracted a lot of attention not because of his ceremony but because of his innerwear. The one Hwang Hee-Chan wore was a suit called Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems, or EPTS.

There are many advanced technologies used in various sports including soccer, cycling, baseball, and even archery and tennis.  At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka this year, two Korean freestyle swimmers made it to the championship round for the first time. The Australian Swimming Team, one of the best national teams in the world, taught advanced dolphin kicks to the Korean National Team last year while they were on tour in Australia.

In swimming, dolphin kicks are very important as most of the swimming style starts with it and add speed when making turns and it can significantly shorten time records for swimmers. From the 2012 London Olympics, Swim Team USA partnered with BMW to enhance the athlete’s kick motion. Then, the more advanced motion detector and video-capturing BMW software were developed for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The updated version can capture kick depth and rate metrics. The software is similar to the ones already used in many BMW automobiles, which measure and identify humans and items for park distance, road, or lane deviations.

More recently, 3D printing and LED motion detectors are used to make a 0.01-second difference, which decides what medals players get. Each kick in swimming is important and leg movements must be synchronized. Technology can help to achieve these movements. We are living in a world where humans improve science every day, and we gain help from these new technologies.
