It is probable that everyone has had at least one nightmare in their lifetime. Considering how widespread nightmares are, numerous psychologists have researched the impact of nightmares on mental health disorders. In summary of all the databases published, a group of researchers has hypothesized that if there is a presence of nightmares, it impacts the psychiatric symptoms of people and stimulates later mental health troubles. To support this hypothesis, a few researchers have decided to unfold papers published in peer-reviewed journals from 1980 to 2022.

All studies have examined different age groups, ranging from children to adults. According to The British Psychological Society, mainly focusing on psychosis, two studies suggested a correlation between nightmares in children and an increase in later psychosis, indicating the loss of contact with reality in the mind. Not only did nightmares lead to psychosis, but it also revealed that “nightmares predicted the future happenings not only of suicidal ideation but also attempts and completed suicide.” However, a major advantage was found regarding the correlation between these two. For instance, a few studies suggested that certain treatments such as Imagery Rehearsal and Exposure Therapy could moderate improvements in mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Although evidence was given from various studies in support of the correlation between mental disorders and nightmares, many authors underscore the need for the development of quantitative data as no specific measurements were given from these studies. Nevertheless, the team was able to effectively address their hypothesis utilizing evidence targeting different aspects of the topic.
