The Peril of AI Overdependency: Are We Becoming Robots?
ÀμöÈ£ °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2023.10.26 21:17

The development of AI and its benefits have recently been the subject of endless discussions. As AI technology grows, they are utilized in various ways from business forecasts to education platforms, and chatbots?or the well-known ChatGPT. However, the development of AI has been on an unprecedented scale due to how widely and quickly information is shared in the modern world. It has been the most impactful among any other Industrial Revolutions in the past, so further caution is required to prevent over-reliance on AI.

Imagine this situation: A programmer struggles to determine the code's logic. They can simply ask AI chatbots to write the code in the blink of a second. No matter how accurate the answer is, AI’s direct solution can dampen one’s critical thinking skills, which would be a major long-term problem with the usage of AI. This means people’s creativity erodes while AI becomes more intelligible, which may be the phenomenon people regard as AI ruling over humans. When such practice persists, we are inevitably controlled by knowledge disseminated by the AI without our creative outlets because of its predetermined sets of data.

This is not to say to discourage the use of AI. Of course, similar issues were present throughout the technical developments such as the Internet. However, in those cases, technologies didn’t create new knowledge but fostered the dissemination of knowledge from humans. Thus, critical thinking skills were still required to use the technologies effectively. Shifting the point of view, AI can be one of our most valuable sources when they are utilized for “searching” purposes. Given that we are the architects of AI, humans should remain within control of its applications and influence.

This leads to the attitudes users must have. The ongoing advancement of AI is inevitable, and its applications are remarkable. The important takeaway is that we should regard them as a “tool” not a “master”. A fitting analogy lies in the history of robotics: Humans once used robots for simple and repetitive tasks since the Industrial Revolution. Without caution, AI will replace humans and we will become robots. By maintaining this balance, we can harness the benefits of AI while preserving our unique human capabilities and individuality.
