AI Has EmotionWhat is Emotion and Can AI Have Emotion?

In this rapidly changing world, artificial intelligence(AI) is now considered to mimic human thought processes. Despite the drastic growth of technology, some still argue that AI lacks one essential aspect of human intelligence: emotions.

However, I would like to ask a very fundamental question.

What is human emotion? Scientifically speaking, human emotion is nothing more than a chemical reaction between the neurotransmitters and the electrical signals in the brain. When we cry, we cry because the serotonin and dopamine are inhibited, which causes “depression”. Unless we can prove the existence of the human soul, it is not an overstatement to argue that human emotion is a systematic chemical response that can readily be imitated.

Some large language model AIs already seem to possess emotions. When we say abusive versus friendly language to Chat GPT, Chat GPT’s response will be completely different as if it can understand the connotation of our words and emotionally process those connotations.

Although most people consider this a simple “coded response,” I would like to argue that even human emotion is all about observing its effect. How do we know one has emotion? Is emotion visible? No. Based on the responses, based on the fact that one cries and laughs at an appropriate moment, we assume that one has emotion. Same with AI. Who were we to state that robots are emotionless, while humans are when their responses are indistinguishable?

Of course, based on numerous errors observed from current AI it may be too early to put AI on the same level of human intelligence, yet it is also crucial that we don’t underestimate their potential. AI can draw images, write poems, and produce songs today - we don’t know what they will be able to do tomorrow.
