The Evolution and Utilization of Narcotics

Nowadays, various illegal drug-related issues and influential figures associated with these illicit matters have been emerging in the media. Marijuana is currently becoming legalized in varying countries, and there are even protests in favor of its legalization.

In fact, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that drugs have been a part of the beginning of human civilization. There is a hypothesis dealing with marijuana suggesting that the cultivation of it initiated the agricultural culture of humankind.

Before the advancement of chemical technology, drugs like marijuana and opium were misused as panaceas and were even administered to infants; as chemistry evolved, in 1804, German chemist Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Serturner succeeded in isolating pure morphine from opium. The effects of this drug were extraordinary, to say the least. Scientists were curious about why such a drug had a profound impact on our bodies, and the result was the discovery that our bodies naturally contain endorphins. So, taking opioid-based drugs like morphine triggers the endorphin receptors already present in our bodies, affecting our brains.

Today, most drugs are illegal, and there is a strong emphasis on educating people about the seriousness of drug use. However, there are situations where such drugs can be used for beneficial purposes. For patients in excruciating pain, opioids can be prescribed to provide a peaceful end. They are also employed for surgical patients who cannot endure unbearable pain. Even what is considered the worst drug when abused by pleasure-seeking individuals, such as fentanyl, was originally developed as a painkiller by Janssen.

Thus, drugs can be considered both the worst and the best for humanity. Their proper usage can save lives, while their misuse can destroy not only the individual but those around them. I wish science were used more conscientiously to lead to significant progress in human society.
