Economists and the Federal Reserve predicted that due to interest rate hikes earlier this year, the U.S. economy would be shaking by now. However, despite recent adversities, it has become evident that the economy is accelerating. 

The labor market actually strengthened further during the third quarter. Job additions in September significantly outpaced those in August and July. Monthly retail and food service sales increased by 0.7% in September, following a 0.6% increase in July and a 0.8% increase in September. Even the previously struggling manufacturing sector has shown signs of a rebound this spring. The Federal Reserve announced a 0.4% increase in factory production for September. Despite these positive signs, inflation has continued to ease, with a decrease from the record high of 9.1% in June last year to 3.7% in September.

As a result, Federal Reserve officials have indicated that they will hold off on further interest rate hikes unless new price pressures emerge. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in 22 years to a decade-high of 5.25-5.5% over the past 19 months to temper the economy and control inflation. Fed officials are “proceeding carefully,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said in a speech Thursday.

경기 둔화가 예상을 뒤엎고 반전

올해 하반기에는 경기가 둔화될 것으로 예상됐지만 정반대의 시나리오가 펼쳐지고 있다. 경제학자들과 연준은 올해 초 금리 인상으로 인해 미국 경제가 지금쯤 흔들리고 있을 것이라고 예상했다. 그러나 최근의 역경에도 불구하고 경제가 가속화되고 있다는 것이 분명해졌다.

실제로 노동시장은 3분기 동안 더욱 강화됐다. 9월 일자리 추가는 8월과 7월의 일자리 증가를 크게 앞질렀다. 월별 소매 및 식품 서비스 매출은 7월 0.6% 증가, 9월 0.8% 증가에 이어 9월 0.7% 증가했다. 이전에 어려움을 겪었던 제조업 부문도 올 봄에는 반등 조짐을 보였다. 연준은 9월 공장생산이 0.4% 증가했다고 발표했다. 이러한 긍정적인 징후에도 불구하고 인플레이션은 지속적으로 완화되어 지난해 6월 9.1%로 사상 최고치를 기록한 뒤 9월 3.7%로 하락했다.

결과적으로, 연방준비제도(Fed?연준) 관계자들은 추가 금리 동결을 시사했다. 새로운 물가압력이 나타나지 않는 한 금리 인상은 불가피하다. 연방준비은행 22년 만에 금리를 10년 최고치로 인상했다. 경제를 진정시키고 인플레이션을 통제하기 위해 지난 19개월 동안 5.25~5.5%를 인상했다. 제롬 파월 연준 의장은 목요일 연설에서 연준 관리들이 “신중하게 진행하고 있다”고 말했다.
