The Psychology Behind Our Memories

The memory model has been a hotly debated topic among cognitive scientists since 1968 when Atkinson and Shiffrin developed the Multi Store Model. However, due to the intangible nature of memory, despite several models having been made, improved, and modified over the years, there is still no certain depiction of our brain process regarding memory. Regardless, it is undeniable that the development of memory models has added fruitful insights to our understanding of memory.

One of those examples is the Working Memory Model(WMM) by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974. Baddley and Hitch's model explains the short-term memory(STM), which is also working memory, from the Multi Store Model(MSM). They claimed that WMM is composed of a central executive that controls three different slave systems. The central executive, like the CPU in a computer, decides which memory will go on to which systems, and accordingly our memories get stored in a visual-spatial sketchpad that deals with all the visual and spatial information, a phonological loop that stores all the verbal information, or episodic buffer that connects STM with long term memory (LTM).

Moreover, this model helps us to understand the latency caused by multitasking. This model stated that processing two or more tasks through the same slave system can cause action latency. For instance, multitasking to listen to music and drink from a cup is not difficult; however, listening to two people talking simultaneously may be challenging.

Although the exact science behind our brains is unknown, the ardent endeavor of cognitive psychologists continues to understand our brains better and to make more informed decisions in daily life.
