Can you believe that the fetus is parasitic in the fetus? This can happen, and only about 200 causes have been reported worldwide. 

A parasitic twin (fetus) is a rare condition where a baby is born with an underdeveloped twin attached to its body. Also known as “vestigial twins,” this condition is closely related to conjoined twins. Conjoined twins are twins who are physically connected. 

Developed functional twins are medically known as primordial or dominant twins, while underdeveloped twins are simply referred to as parasitic twins. Dominant twins are usually healthy in most aspects but may have extra tissue, organs, or limbs from the parasitic conjoined twin. There are two main theories about the cause of parasitic twins. Both theories are linked to the early development of the fetus. The first theory is the fission theory.

This theory suggests that parasitic fetuses occur early in pregnancy, usually at the end of the first two weeks. When identical twins are born, parasitic twins are formed if the fertilized egg does not completely separate into two parts and one part stops developing. The second theory is the fusion theory. 

This second theory proposes an inverse mechanism in which the fertilized eggs are successfully separated but later come into contact with each other. Keep in mind that the parasitic twins are not alive. They almost always die while they are in the womb or when they are born.
