Why Are We Being Misled by Fake News in the Media?
김담은 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2023.12.04 21:03

Throughout the pandemic, a surge in deceptive narratives, encompassing conspiracy theories like the denial of the COVID-19 virus and suspicions about vaccine contents, has captured numerous individuals. Contrary to attributing susceptibility to intelligence, the inclination to fall prey to misinformation is rooted in broader cognitive patterns.

Primarily, the efficiency of communication prompts people to instinctively assume the veracity of the information they encounter, facilitating comprehension by accepting initial statements as factual. When bombarded with a multitude of information simultaneously, individuals, even if aware of falsehoods, yield to cognitive overload or external pressures, compromising their ability to discern truth.

Psychologically, 'confirmation bias' deepens the entrenchment of beliefs, as individuals selectively embrace information aligning with pre-existing views. Overcoming this bias is challenging due to a reluctance to admit error and a lack of perceived need for correction.

In conclusion, the media capitalizes on our cognitive predispositions to spread misinformation. Vulnerability to false news arises from undue trust in information sources, misjudgments exacerbated by cognitive overload, and the reinforcement of beliefs through confirmation bias. Vigilance against misinformation involves meticulous scrutiny of sources and internet addresses and a comprehensive evaluation of supporting evidence beyond news titles.
