Emotions: the Contributors of World-Building

Inside Out (2015) is a Pixar film that chronicles the journey of five personified emotions?disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and anger?through the life of Riley, the main character. The spectator does not question Riley's expressions or thinking; these five emotions capture the entirety of his thoughts. Instead, we don't give the fleeting nature of these feelings a second thought since we believe that the five diverse emotions cover all of our common emotions.

Society has influenced our understanding of and interactions with our own emotions for a very long time. Not only have we restricted ourselves to a narrow spectrum of expression, but the recognition of a larger spectrum has been viewed as a worrying characteristic.  Social perceptions have set arbitrary boundaries towards “acceptable” emotions and our construction of the world has been limited to these options.

Riley from Inside Out would feel a little differently if he had an elder brother named Ryan. However, how can we account for these disparate emotional standards? The environment we've created now is incomprehensible to new and complicated emotions, and the simple emotions that remain are viewed differently by different individuals. Seeking treatment from a therapist to manage depression is viewed as a dysfunctional condition, which can lead to prejudice at work or in educational institutions.

The act of weeping is interpreted differently by genders; men who cry are thought to have fallen short of society's expectations of a masculine person who is not overtly vulnerable. The world we have made is artificial and inorganic in this sense. Our everyday experiences shape our emotions, and our ideas of what constitutes appropriate feeling are prejudiced and constrictive. Free emotions are essential to the development of society in a world where individuality is genuinely realized.

The free expression and expression of our true inner selves would create the imaginative world we, as world builders, desire. The core of the imaginative world is based on the acceptance of our various emotions, the fundamental foundation of freedom and dignity.
