Alexei Navalny, the jailed opposition party leader, was found dead on the 16th of February in a Russian Arctic Prison at the age of 47 while serving a 19-year prison sentence. His death has sparked much controversy, with some claiming that Navalny was assassinated and some claiming that the guards tortured him. His official cause of death was “Sudden Death Syndrome.”

Following his death, thousands of mourners gathered in Moscow for the funeral of Alexei Naval. Mourners - equipped with red carnations - were seen expressing voices of dissent against Putin, chanting, “Putin is a killer” and “You weren’t afraid, we aren’t afraid”.

The Russian Government detained over 400 people in cities across Russia for attending the funeral procession in the two weeks since Navalny had passed away without a proper explanation. According to the group, at least 115 people were detained on Friday.

Navalny’s body was returned to his family one week after his sudden death in the Arctic Circle and was buried in Borisovo cemetery in his childhood neighborhood. It is undeniable that Navalny’s death has sparked concerns about the maintenance of fundamental human rights and the well-being of the hundreds of other prisoners in Russia.
