The Wonderful World of Semiconductors
차윤우 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2024.04.16 21:16

Semiconductors, the beating heart and poster child of the digital age, are responsible for revolutionizing the world in profound ways since their discovery. These tiny but powerful components serve as the backbone of modern electronics, enabling everything from smartphones and computers to lighting and renewable energy systems.

Semiconductors are materials that have electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. They are typically made from elements such as silicon and germanium, which have four valence electrons in their outermost shell. This special property allows them to form a crystalline structure with a small energy gap between the valence and conduction bands (compared to an insulator), making it possible to control their conductivity with the addition of impurities or energy. This unique property permits the high level of control necessary to create binary electrical signals to relay information.

Semiconductors are irreplaceable resources in modern society, allowing the use of a wide range of electronic devices and systems. They play a crucial role in computing, telecommunications, LED lighting, renewable energy, and many more.

Semiconductors have transformed the world in once unimaginable ways, shaping the course of technological progress and driving innovation across industries. Without them, we would lack the very foundation upon which most of modern society relies.
