Consumer Spending Slowdown in 2024
최예훈 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2024.06.25 21:07

Despite robust growth in recent years, the economic outlook for 2024 shows signs of a significant slowdown in consumer spending. Various factors are converging to reduce disposable income and consumer confidence.

During the pandemic, accumulated excess savings have now largely been depleted. Wage growth has slowed, leading to reduced disposable income. The resumption of student loan repayments in the U.S. has increased financial burdens, further limiting spending capacity. Rising delinquency rates among millennials and subprime auto loans indicate a decline in consumer financial health, undermining spending confidence.

This slowdown directly impacts economic growth. Reduced spending lowers corporate revenues, affecting employment and investment, particularly in the services sector. Consumer spending is a primary economic driver, making this trend a significant threat to overall economic performance.

Experts predict U.S. economic growth to drop to 0.7% in 2024 from 2.8% in 2023. While the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates to stimulate the economy, balancing this with inflation control is challenging. Addressing this requires easing loan repayment terms, supporting low-income households, and investing in job creation. Businesses must also adapt strategies to stimulate demand amid changing conditions.

In conclusion, the 2024 consumer spending slowdown poses substantial risks, necessitating proactive measures from both the government and businesses to mitigate negative impacts on economic growth.
