Innovative Technologies Bring Music to Life for the Deaf Community

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) is making significant strides in enabling deaf individuals to enjoy music through its newest technologies. One of their latest developments is a haptic band that allows users to feel the rhythm and melody of music through their skin.

This technology was showcased at the "Barrier-Free" performance titled "What Sign? Performance What Sign!" on August 26, 2023, at the Chungnam Music Creation Center.

This annual event, held since 2021, aims to overcome cultural barriers by featuring collaborations between deaf and hearing artists. This year, artists from the pre-social enterprise HandSpeak and local musicians will present a unique performance combining music and sign language, offering a multisensory experience.

Team GIST developed this haptic band as part of their project to create immersive music and dance visualization technologies for the deaf. The band detects external sounds and converts elements such as rhythm and beats into haptic vibrations, allowing users to feel the music.

GIST continues to enhance these technologies and expand their applications. They have partnered with Sorii Clinic to ensure ongoing testing and updates. They are collaborating with ETRI on a project to develop multisensory music experience systems and educational solutions for the deaf.

These efforts are vital to the deaf community to enjoy deeper emotional connections and social experiences through music, advancing accessibility and inclusivity in the arts.
