Language is a means of expressing or communicating an idea or feeling. It is most often expressed through the voice, but it can also be conveyed through text or body language.
One language that many people are familiar with is sign language, and there are different methods of communication for deafblind people who find it difficult to use standard sign language.
They communicate by touching signs with their hands through a method called tactile signing, a type of sign language. In this method, the deafblind person places their hand on the hand of the person who is using sign language and physically feels the signs.
Another method is called Tadoma, which involves touching the speaker’s chin and neck to recognize the speaker's words through the movement of the mouth and vocal cords. In addition, the Deafblind Manual Alphabet is a language in which the other person writes letters on the deafblind person's hands to communicate. Each letter has a specific symbol, and it is a well-known method used to communicate using these symbols.
Thus, people with deafblindness, who cannot use sight and hearing, often shift their focus to their sense of touch for communication and activities. In fact, the Deafblind Foundation called "Sense" in the UK offers many activities that use the sense of touch. In particular, there are many art activities, one of which is particularly impressive: creating paintings by mixing scented oils and paints. For example, participants can express scents in their paintings by mixing orange-scented oil with paint.
In addition, "Sense" assesses a person’s level of disability and personality, assigns a personal counselor, and offers activities accordingly. People with severe vision and hearing loss participate in swimming activities to maximize their sense of touch, while those with some residual vision and hearing enjoy activities in a multi-sensory room equipped with objects that stimulate the senses with light and sound.
