India’s mica mining industry, a crucial supplier to global markets, is currently exploiting thousands of laborers, many of them children, in a situation that demands immediate attention. In the poverty-stricken regions of Jharkhand and Bihar, children as young as six spend hours each day collecting mica flakes under hazardous conditions. Without protective gear, they inhale fine mica dust, leading to severe respiratory diseases, while constant exposure to rough terrain results in chronic injuries. Despite India’s laws banning child labor in hazardous industries, enforcement remains weak, allowing illegal mines to flourish.
Families ensnared in cycles of poverty are left with little choice but to send their children to work, earning a meager income. Many of these children are deprived of education and any hope of escaping labor exploitation. With limited job opportunities, adults in these regions struggle to provide for their families, making child labor an economic necessity rather than a choice.
Multinational corporations, heavily reliant on mica for cosmetics, electronics, and automotive parts, play a significant role in perpetuating this issue. They have pledged ethical sourcing, but loopholes in supply chains allow illegally mined mica to enter the global market. While some companies have initiated transparency measures, the industry remains largely unregulated, making it difficult to track whether mica has been mined ethically.
Government efforts to regulate mica production have failed to eliminate exploitation as demand rises. NGOs have stepped in to provide alternative education and employment opportunities, yet without systemic change, these efforts remain limited. Advocacy groups argue that corporate accountability and strict government oversight are the only ways to dismantle the exploitation embedded in the industry. The need for systemic change is urgent, and your support is crucial. Until meaningful action is taken, mica mining will continue to be a hidden source of modern-day slavery, with thousands of children trapped in dangerous, unpaid labor.
