There’s an old saying: “Whoever owns the means of production controls the market.” In today’s AI economy, that means one thing: GPUs.
The most powerful and influential AI companies - OpenAI, DeepSeek, Google DeepMind, and others - all rely on Nvidia. Competing in AI today isn’t just about having the best technology; you also need the capital to buy the compute power behind it.
AI has long been seen as one of the most democratic technologies. Tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot are widely accessible and affordable, seemingly giving anyone the ability to create, learn, and build. But the real power lies with large-scale, high-performing models - and they all run on Nvidia’s GPUs.
Training and deploying large language models (LLMs) requires thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of specialized chips like the Nvidia H100 or A100. The costs are staggering, ranging from millions to even tens of millions of dollars.
As a result, Nvidia has become the gatekeeper of advanced AI. Startups, academic labs, and mid-sized companies often can’t afford the necessary hardware. For them, joining the AI race is simply out of reach.
In today’s landscape, strong algorithms alone aren’t enough; you also need the infrastructure to train them. That’s why companies like OpenAI and DeepSeek have partnered with tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon to secure dedicated compute resources.
State-of-the-art AI now looks less like an open field of innovation and more like luxury tech - a domain accessible only to those with deep pockets. AI is getting smarter, but also more exclusive. What was once imagined as a technology for everyone is drifting into the realm of high-end consumption.
We once believed AI would democratize power. However, today’s reality tells a different story - one shaped by expensive GPUs, elite partnerships, and growing technological inequality.
There may still be a future for AI. However, the real question is: will it be a future for everyone, or only for those who can afford to buy it?
