Rising Use of E-Cigarettes Among Teens: “Not Harmless”

The use of e-cigarettes among middle and high school students has surged in recent years. With a wide variety of flavors and less noticeable smell, the perception that e-cigarettes are "mild" has spread, turning their use into a trend. However, behind this trend lies a serious threat to adolescent health.

According to the 2024 Youth Health Behavior Survey published by South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, the proportion of teenagers who have tried e-cigarettes has nearly doubled compared to 2019. In particular, middle school students cited reasons such as "curiosity," "stress relief," and "peer influence" for trying e-cigarettes for the first time.

Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes produce little to no odor and are easy to charge and use. As a result, students often use them in school bathrooms or hallways without being noticed. A teacher at a high school in Seoul reported, “In just one month, four students were caught using e-cigarettes.”

The core issue is that these e-cigarettes still contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Nicotine is especially harmful to adolescents whose brains are still developing, and repeated use can lead to reduced concentration, anxiety disorders, and insomnia.

Some students claim that “it makes me feel better temporarily” or “it helps relieve stress,” but experts warn that these effects are simply signs of addiction, not genuine relief. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has strongly warned against the dangers of e-cigarettes, stating that “they are never safe for youth.”

E-cigarettes are not just a "less harmful alternative." In reality, this perception has led to more reckless and widespread use among teens. Habits formed during adolescence shape a person’s lifelong health. Therefore, families, schools, and society as a whole must work to raise awareness about the reality of e-cigarettes and provide education and countermeasures to reduce smoking-related influences. Instead of thinking “it’s probably fine,” young people must realize, “It’s my health—I have to protect it.”
