Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told lawmakers Tuesday that the central bank remains focused on ensuring that any one-time price increases resulting from higher tariffs do not turn into “an ongoing inflation problem.” Powell has said little to suggest a rate cut next month. Instead, he noted that solid economic activity in recent months allows officials to carefully analyze inflation and employment data before deciding if and when to resume rate cuts after a six-month hiatus. Fed officials held their benchmark short-term rate steady last week in a unanimous decision. However, divisions among policymakers are beginning to emerge.

“The effects on inflation could be short-lived - reflecting a one-time change in the price level. It’s also possible that the inflation effects could be more persistent,” Powell said. Two Fed officials appointed by former President Trump, Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, have recently indicated that they could support a rate cut as early as the Fed’s next meeting in late July. Both expect the tariffs to result in a small, one-time price increase that is unlikely to drive inflation beyond next year. The Fed is scheduled to release another report on inflation and employment before the July meeting.

Other policymakers have indicated they might support a rate cut at the September meeting if incoming data suggest a softer labor market or more subdued price pressures. New economic forecasts released last week revealed a growing divide in expectations: 10 officials projected at least two rate cuts this year, seven forecasted none, and two anticipated just one. The Federal Reserve has four more policy meetings scheduled for the remainder of the year, leaving room for further shifts in policy.

트럼프 지명 위원인 월러와 보우먼은 7월 말 회의에서 금리 인하를 지지할 수 있다고 밝혔고, 이는 일시적이고 소폭의 물가 상승에 그칠 것이라는 판단에 기반하고 있다.

연준은 7월 회의 전 인플레이션과 고용 관련 추가 보고서를 발표할 예정이며, 일부 위원들은 9월 회의에서 금리 인하를 검토할 가능성도 언급했다.

지난주 발표된 경제 전망에 따르면, 올해 최소 두 차례 인하를 예상한 위원이 10명, 인하 없음은 7명, 1회 인하는 2명이었다. 연준은 올해 네 차례의 회의를 남겨두고 있다.
