This spring, when President Trump imposed tariffs on several countries around the world, many economists feared the economy would slow down due to rising prices and reduced spending. The world held its breath, waiting for the bottom to fall out.
But that didn’t happen. Now, both businesses and consumers are bouncing back, and evidence is mounting that people who had been holding back are starting to spend again.
The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index, which fell to a nearly three-year low in April, is now back on the rise. Retail sales have exceeded economists’ expectations, and there are still no signs of runaway inflation.
“We’ve been surprised again and again by consumers,” said Jonathan Millar, senior U.S. economist at Barclays. He now expects it to keep growing, albeit at a slow pace.

JPMorgan Chase reported unexpectedly strong earnings last week, and its economists no longer expect a recession. The bank said credit card spending rose 7%.Bank of America, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs all reported rising profits, and United Airlines cited improving travel demand.
A survey conducted in July by digital marketing platform Constant Contact showed that 44% of 1,267 small business owners in the U.S. said demand for their goods and services was higher than they had expected back in January.One-third were highly optimistic that their business performance would improve over the next three months, and nearly a third expected to hire more staff by then.
While private-sector hiring has been sluggish, signs of a weakening labor market are emerging.Still, the 4.1% unemployment rate in June remains historically low?partly because employers are reluctant to cut jobs.
Inflation rose slightly in June. Prices of tariff-sensitive goods such as toys, clothing, and furniture increased, signaling that businesses may be starting to pass on tariff costs to consumers.
