James Turrell’s Light Art Returns to Seoul

Seoul’s art scene this summer is marked by the return of legendary American artist James Turrell, widely celebrated as the “master of light.” His solo exhibition, The Return, is being held at Pace Gallery Seoul from June 14 to September 27, 2025, offering visitors a chance to experience the work of one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time.

Turrell, known for transforming light and space into sculptural experiences, presents works that blur the boundary between perception and reality. His installations immerse viewers in environments where light itself becomes the subject. The exhibition highlights pieces that continue Turrell’s decades-long exploration of how humans see and experience light.

Among the featured works are large-scale projections and immersive light chambers that shift in color and intensity, creating spaces where audiences feel suspended between the material and the immaterial. Visitors describe the experience as both meditative and disorienting, with light shaping not only the environment but also their state of mind.

This exhibition comes at a time when interest in immersive art is growing worldwide. From teamLab’s digital environments to Olafur Eliasson’s atmospheric installations, audiences increasingly seek art that engages all the senses. Turrell’s works stand apart by focusing on the purity of light, stripping away distractions to reveal its raw, transformative power.

Seoul has hosted Turrell’s works before, but The Return marks a significant moment, reaffirming his role in shaping how contemporary art can alter perception. For art lovers and the general public alike, the show is expected to be one of the summer’s cultural highlights.

As visitors step into Turrell’s luminous spaces, they are invited not just to look at art, but to dwell within it, to experience light as form, time, and presence. The Return promises to leave audiences with a renewed sense of how profoundly art can reshape the way we see the world.
