A large-scale immigration raid at a construction site for an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant has resulted in the detention of hundreds of foreign workers, including more than 300 South Koreans.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the majority of those detained had entered the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) or a B-1 business visa and were found to be engaging in unauthorized labor—actions that constitute clear violations of U.S. immigration and labor laws.
The incident has reignited political debate in Washington over immigration enforcement and the protection of domestic labor markets. Republican lawmakers praised the crackdown, calling it a “necessary measure to protect American jobs,” and urged stricter enforcement of immigration laws.
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in on social media, emphasizing the importance of border security and defending American workers from illegal competition.
On the other hand, some Democratic lawmakers acknowledged the legal basis for the operation but pointed to deeper flaws in the current visa system. “The structural loopholes in short-term visa programs are contributing to the illegal labor market,” one member said, calling for comprehensive immigration and visa reform.
U.S. authorities have described the operation as more than just an administrative action, framing it as a demonstration of sovereign authority and consistent law enforcement. Officials stated that even if diplomatic friction arises, there will be no exceptions to the rule of law.
“This action does not target any specific country,” said one official. “It sends a clear message that all foreign nationals are held to the same legal standards. The United States is an open nation, but one that upholds order and the rule of law.”
Observers note that the raid has once again drawn international attention to the realities of immigrant labor in the United States. Analysts suggest that the crackdown could have broader diplomatic implications, potentially influencing future U.S.–South Korea relations.
