On October 1, 2025, the United States federal government shut down. Federal agencies halted many services, and even airports faced flight delays. But why does the U.S. keep shutting down its government?
A federal government shutdown happens when Congress fails to pass a federal budget before the new fiscal year starts on October 1. Without a budget, most departments cannot legally spend money because of a law called the Antideficiency Act. The law prohibits the government from spending money not approved by Congress.
During a government shutdown, federal employees deemed “essential,” including air traffic controllers, are required to work without pay until funding is restored. The current shutdown began when lawmakers could not agree on how to fund several programs, including healthcare and social welfare spending. Political conflict between Democrats and Republicans has made compromise difficult.

In the past, Congress has used temporary budgets called a continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a shutdown, but this time even that didn’t work. As a result, thousands of government employees are on unpaid leave, national parks and museums are closed, and public services are delayed.
One of the sectors facing serious problems due to the shutdown is the aviation industry. Many controllers, tired of working without pay, have taken sick leave or stayed home. The Department of Transportation reported that some airports now have less than half their normal staff. Major hubs like Nashville and Atlanta are reducing flights and warning passengers about long delays. The airline industry says the longer the shutdown continues, the greater the risk to both flight schedules and safety.
The U.S. government shutdown is more than just a political fight. It shows how deeply it can affect people’s everyday lives. Workers lose pay, public services stop, and trust in the system begins to fade. The shutdown reminds people that government decisions are not distant issues but part of everyone’s daily lives.
