After traveling 6,600 miles (10,600 kilometers) to Peru, dentist Gautam Sharma has returned from a humanitarian mission where he helped deliver vital emergency dental care to more than 1,000 children living in remote rural communities. Sharma, who practices at West Earlham Dental Practice in Norwich, is a dedicated member of the charity group Dental Mavericks.
Dental Mavericks is committed to delivering essential dental care to underserved communities, with a mission to end tooth pain through respectful, patient-centered treatment. Mr. Sharma reflected, “We might not have the most advanced equipment or perfect lighting, but when you’re treating patients in a deck chair with just a head torch, it really reminds me of the core reason I chose this profession.”
This journey was not his first experience volunteering abroad — Mr. Sharma has previously provided dental aid along the Syrian border and in Morocco’s mountainous regions, offering care to those who have little or no access to dental treatment. “Toothache can be excruciating for people in rural areas where there’s no dental care,” he said. “Here in the UK, a simple filling might solve the problem, but over there it can mean extracting a tooth. Once teeth are lost, oral health can decline rapidly. That’s why we also focused on oral health education in schools — to leave behind something lasting, not just immediate treatment.”

Mr. Sharma described the conditions as “military-style,” with dentists bringing their own tools because of the shortage of basic dental equipment, including drills. He also expressed gratitude for the generosity of his patients in Norfolk. “We’ve had incredible support — people have donated handmade toys, Norwich City shirts, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. It’s amazing to see how much compassion people have,” he said.
One of the moments that stood out most to him involved a young boy in distress. “A child came in for a filling but returned later in severe pain just as we were packing up. We had to remove the tooth — something that could easily have been treated here at home. Seeing the relief on his face and knowing he no longer had to suffer or burden his parents with a long journey to a city dentist was incredibly moving. It made all the effort worthwhile.”
Mr. Sharma said he plans to continue volunteering with Dental Mavericks and is already preparing for another mission next year to help more people in need of essential dental care.
Mr. Sharma’s journey with Dental Mavericks highlights the profound impact that compassionate, hands-on care can have in underserved communities. Hopefully, his story will inspire others in the dental profession to provide similar humanitarian services around the world.
