In East London, a £5.8 million state-of-the-art dental and educational complex is scheduled to be built. The centre, situated in Barking, is anticipated to provide NHS dental services to more than 5,000 patients each year and train around 130 aspiring dental professionals.
The new dental centre is planned to open in September 2026. It is being funded by Barking and Dagenham Council and Queen Mary University of London, which are working together on the project.
Professor Sir Mark Caulfield from Queen Mary University of London said this is a rare chance to make a significant improvement in people’s oral and overall health in the community.
The council leader, Dominic Twomey, explained that it has always been hard to bring dentists to an area that does not have enough dental services. He said the new centre will give thousands of local people access to good dental care that they cannot get right now.

He also said that once the students finish their training, they will work all over the country and help address the shortage of dentists in many places.
Right now in Barking, NHS data shows that 65% of children aged three to five and nearly 80% of adults aged 18 to 34 cannot get NHS dental care. Around two out of five children have tooth decay.
Doctors say there is strong evidence that oral health is closely connected to overall health, especially in relation to problems such as obesity, smoking, heart disease, and diabetes.
Professor Farida Fortune from Queen Mary University of London said that if a person’s mouth is not healthy, then the rest of the body is not healthy either. She added that by having dentists work directly in the community, they can teach people about both oral health and general health.
Professor Caulfield stated that by offering top-quality dental training right in the community, the programme is breaking down the barriers that have made it hard for people to get care. This means that the people who need dental help the most can receive it for free and without having to travel far.
