Silence Is Not Neutral: How Cultural Differences Shape Communication
이준수 강남포스트 학생기자 | 승인 2026.04.28 20:55

In a globalized world, communication across cultures is becoming increasingly common. However, the meaning of silence can differ greatly depending on cultural context, shaping how individuals are perceived in social interactions. This article explores these differences across France, Korea, and China, focusing on how silence is interpreted in various settings, including classrooms, group discussions, and everyday interactions.

In France, active participation—such as asking questions or expressing opinions—is generally seen as a sign of engagement. In many classroom settings, students frequently interrupt discussions to contribute ideas, and this behavior is encouraged. In this context, remaining silent may be interpreted as a lack of interest or involvement.

In contrast, in Korea, communication often emphasizes timing and an awareness of social hierarchy. Speaking too quickly or interrupting others may be perceived as disrespectful. As a result, individuals may hesitate before speaking to maintain harmony. However, this hesitation can also lead others to interpret silence as a lack of preparation or confidence, especially in academic settings like group presentations. Similarly, in China, while communication tends to be less direct, maintaining consistent interaction is vital for building relationships. Extended periods of silence may create emotional distance, as they can be interpreted as disengagement from the group.

Across these cultural contexts, the same behavior is often understood in different ways. What one individual perceives as careful adaptation is often understood by others as passivity. To address this, I experimented with new communication strategies, such as speaking earlier in conversations, asking questions when uncertain, and focusing on participation rather than perfection. These changes led to more visible engagement and improved interpersonal connections.

This case highlights how communication is shaped not only by language but also by cultural expectations. As interactions across cultures continue to increase, understanding these differences becomes essential. It raises an important question: can silence ever truly be neutral in communication?
