In recent years, the media has developed tremendously. As society has advanced, it has greatly influenced the way media functions and shapes our lives. With just a simple swipe of a finger, we now live in a world where all information is instantly accessible. While this ease of scrolling provides convenience and efficiency, it can also have serious negative effects on our daily lives.
According to a Korea nationwide survey on overdependence of smartphones conducted from 2017 to 2025, a consistently high proportion of individuals falls into the potential risk group. This growing dependence on smartphones can lead to various daily life difficulties. Physically, it can cause musculoskeletal problems like herniated discs, as well as vision deterioration and sleep disorders.

Mentally, excessive media use can impair frontal lobe function, leading to decreased concentration, ADHD, and even what is referred to as “digital dementia.” Furthermore, excessive exposure to digital media for children and adolescents can result in developmental delays, reduced social skills, and increased vulnerability to cybercrime.
In conclusion, while the media has become deeply integrated into our lives and made them more convenient and connected, its excessive use poses serious risks that cannot be ignored. Therefore, it is essential to develop a more balanced and mindful approach to media consumption. By setting limits, encouraging offline activities, and promoting awareness of these risks, society can work toward minimizing the harmful effects of media while still benefiting from its advantages.
