Just a few years ago, when students did not know something, they usually asked their teachers or looked it up in a book. These days, however, students use AI tools such as ChatGPT to find solutions faster. These changes are affecting students’ study methods, critical thinking skills, and assignment culture overall.
AI is bringing about a major change in the way students study. In the past, students usually had to read and summarize long texts or solve math problems step by step. Now, AI summarizes texts in a few seconds and even provides solutions when students simply upload a picture of a problem. As a result, the process of completing assignments has become much easier. Nevertheless, at the same time, concerns are growing regarding how AI should be used in schools.
Some schools restrict the use of AI, while others are actively including AI in their classes. The main reason is that if students become too dependent on it, their ability to think for themselves may weaken. Also, teachers are facing difficulties because it is becoming increasingly challenging to judge whether an assignment was done by students themselves or with help from AI.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to using AI in education. Students can reduce the time spent on basic research and focus more on thinking critically and analyzing their own opinions. Experts claim that students should use AI as a learning tool, not as a tool that simply gives them answers. By doing so, AI can act like a personal tutor, providing assistance tailored to each student’s level and learning pace. If it is used properly, AI can enhance the thinking skills of students rather than weaken them.
AI has already become a part of our lives and is beginning to influence schools as well. While there are concerns about students being overly dependent on AI, the technology can support student learning when used appropriately. Since AI generates answers based on information, creative thinking remains important for students. As AI continues to reshape student culture, schools may focus more on accepting AI wisely, instead of simply banning it.
