These days, many AI tools are being developed. These tools are useful in our lives, allowing us to search for information, discuss ideas, and solve problems.
However, AI does not have only positive effects; it also has negative effects, especially in educational aspects.
This dual nature is detailed in a study published in the Journal of Families and Better Life by Jong-Soo Seo (Associate Professor, Department of Child & Family Welfare, Daegu University) and Se-yun Lim (Undergraduate Student, Department of Special Education, Daegu University).
The researchers argue that when students use AI wisely, it can enhance their critical thinking ability because the process of discussing and communicating with AI provides them with cognitive stimulation.

On the other hand, using AI can decrease cognitive stimulation because students' overdependence on AI prevents them from thinking for themselves, which leads them to a state of cognitive offloading.
According to the research results, students’ degree of AI usage is higher than average (3.84/5.0), but fortunately, their overdependence on AI is lower than average (2.75/5.0).
Therefore, educational institutions should shift their focus to teaching students how to use it responsibly as a critical thinking tool.
