OUTRAGE: SOUTH KOREA'S WORST-EVER WORLD CUP DISASTERRed Devils Suffer Historic 34th-Place Finish After Group Stage Capitulation

South Korea’s national football team has officially exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup in agonizing fashion, recording the worst tournament performance in the country’s modern sporting history.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo’s squad arrived in North America with high expectations, featuring elite Europe-based players such as Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in, and Kim Min-jae. However, tactical rigidity and a staggering lack of clinical edge instead produced an unprecedented sporting disaster, culminating in a 34th-place ranking in the expanded 48-team field.

The Fatal Blow
The catastrophic campaign reached its bitter end during a grim evening at Monterrey Stadium, where South Korea fell 1-0 to South Africa. Needing only a single point to advance to the round of 32 as group runners-up, the Taegeuk Warriors choked under pressure.

Despite bringing talisman Son Heung-min off the bench at halftime to inject life into a sluggish attack, the team conceded a decisive 63rd-minute goal to South Africa’s Thapelo Maseko. South Korea failed to stage a comeback, managing zero goals in its final two group matches.

Group A Final Standings and Results
In the final Group A standings, Mexico finished first after defeating Korea 1-0. The Czech Republic took second place despite its 1-2 loss to Korea. South Korea finished third with three points from one win and two losses, while South Africa finished fourth after its 1-0 win over Korea.

Unwanted History by the Numbers
The fallout from the tournament has rewritten the record books for all the wrong reasons. The team’s 34th-place finish is the lowest in 72 years of World Cup history, falling below the previous worst of 30th at France 1998. Furthermore, its tally of only two goals in three matches represents the country’s worst attacking return in 28 years.

To make matters worse, Coach Hong Myung-bo became the first manager in World Cup history to be eliminated in the group stage twice with the same nation, repeating his disappointing 2014 exit in Brazil.

While the tournament started with high hopes after a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, subsequent 1-0 defeats to Mexico and South Africa exposed deep structural problems.

The team held on to slim hopes of advancing as one of the best third-place teams, but when the group stage concluded on June 28, Korea finished 10th among the 12 third-place teams. Only the top eight progressed, cementing a historic humiliation that will prompt an immediate and far-reaching review of the country’s entire football structure.
