South Korea and France to Lead Global Talks on the Future of Film

South Korea and France will bring together leaders from the global entertainment industry on September 7 for the Lumière Summit, an international meeting focused on the future of cinema and moving-image media. The summit will take place in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, and will be co-chaired by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The event comes as the film industry faces major changes caused by new technology and shifting audience habits. Filmmakers, producers, representatives from streaming platforms and technology companies, and government officials from dozens of countries are expected to participate. Discussions will cover artificial intelligence, film financing, competition with social media, media education, and ways to expand global audiences.

Artificial intelligence is expected to be one of the summit’s major topics. As generative AI becomes increasingly capable of producing images, videos, and other creative content, the film industry is debating how the technology can be used while protecting the work and rights of creative professionals. The summit will also examine the economic pressures facing filmmakers and the changing relationship between cinema, streaming services, television, and video games.

South Korea’s role as co-chair also reflects the country’s growing influence in global culture. Korea’s film and other cultural industries have gained international recognition, while France has historically played a major role in the development and preservation of cinema. The summit gives the two countries an opportunity to build on their cultural influence while strengthening cooperation in the creative industries.

The Lumière Summit will take place during President Lee’s state visit to France from September 6 to 9, which will also include broader discussions on economic, technological, and cultural cooperation. As filmmaking continues to change, the summit could help shape how governments and creative industries respond to new technologies while preserving cinema as a form of cultural expression.
