Incheon International Airport ranked first in the world for international passenger traffic in the first half of 2026. This was the first time it had achieved this ranking since opening in 2001.

Incheon Airport handled 38.39 million international passengers from January to June. This was a 6.3% increase from 36.12 million in the same period last year. London Heathrow Airport ranked second with 37.79 million passengers. Singapore Changi Airport came third with 34.53 million passengers.

Two main factors helped Incheon Airport reach first place. First, more transfer passengers used the airport to reach other destinations. Second, the conflict in the Middle East changed international flight routes. More foreign tourists also visited Korea during this period. These changes may have helped increase passenger traffic at Incheon Airport.

This increase in transfer passengers was one important factor. In the first half of 2026, Incheon Airport handled about 4.24 million transfer passengers. This was an 18.1% increase compared with the same period last year (Incheon International Airport Corporation).

The war between the U.S. and Iran also affected air travel in the Middle East. Major airports in the region, including Dubai International Airport, faced flight disruptions. Some travelers may have chosen other routes. By choosing several other airports, including Incheon Airport, passengers contributed to Incheon Airport taking first place.

Incheon Airport’s first-place ranking is an important achievement for Korea. However, international travel routes can change quickly. I think Incheon Airport should continue to improve its services and prepare for future changes in air travel. This achievement shows how much Korea has developed in the aviation industry. I hope Incheon Airport will continue to grow and attract more international travelers. I look forward to seeing what new achievements it will achieve in the future.
