What are the facts behind a shuttlecock that we use when we play badminton? A shuttlecock is a combination of two words: ‘shuttle’ and ‘cock’. ‘Shuttle’ represents round-trip of the reciprocating shuttlecocks during the game is played by two or more players. Moreover ‘cock’ meaning a chicken, is used because in the past, the feathers of the shuttlecock used to be a chicken’s. These days, shuttlecock feathers used in the Olympics are goose feathers.

There are multiple reasons why the feathers were changed to goose’s from chicken’s. Firstly, the wing axis of the goose is stronger than the chickens. Secondly, since it is a livestock, it is easier to collect the similar quality in large amount. Moreover, chicken feathers have high air permeability, so the air resistance increases, whereas goose feathers has the perfect permeability that makes it suitable for a shuttlecock. Lastly, goose feathers are more greasy, more elastic, and more preferred in formal games of competitions. However, duck feathers, chicken feathers and artificial feathers are seldom used for general shuttlecocks.

When making a shuttlecock, the feathers only comes from the bottom part of the wing. This is because the bottom outer part of the wing is thick and strong because it has more resilience. The wing feathers of the bird are larger, thicker, harder, and higher in quality than the outer feathers of the wing joints of the goose and ducks. This is because the outer feathers have larger, thicker, harder and more elastic landmarks. Also, in the process of making a feather shuttlecock, the goose and duck feathers are turned inside out because the cotton flags inside the feathers are smoother and more shiny.

In the case of a feather shuttlecock, it is highly affected by the weather due to differences in temperature and humidity. For example, at a higher temperature and altitude, the speed and distance increases. The distance here is called the distance of the orbit when it is flying. To adjust the speed of the shuttlecock, the weight of the feather is changed. Therefore, each season has different feather shuttlecocks used.

A nylon shuttlecock is good for outdoors because it has a lot of resistance to the environment such as wind; it has an advantage of high speed and strength. On the other hand, professional players prefer the feather shuttlecock, which is able to present techniques while preventing them from going out of the court.

However, the process of making a feather shuttlecock is problematic. The wings of the shuttlecock comes from the bottom part of a goose’s wing, and there are only 4 feathers that are collectable from one goose. Therefore, to make one shuttlecock, four geese are sacrificed. In the past, to have a higher quality, the plumage were pulled out from a living goose, but today, due to the animal rights, dead goose are used.
