Korea must be Successful on Japan Boycott Movement This Time.

“In the past 25 years, South Korea had never been successful in Japan boycott movement” - would it be true this time?

Recently, Abe, the Japanese prime minister, proclaimed the export regulations on semiconductor materials to South Korea. In order to deal with the proclamation, South Korea has announced Japan boycott. This act caused a “boycott battle” between Japan and South Korea. The outcomes were clear. The Japanese beer, Asahi, has decreased in 20% of sales, and the customers visiting Uniqlo, Japanese clothing store, conspicuously decreased. However, Japan’s reaction was ironically apathetic. Takeshi Okazaki, the chief financial officer of Pastreling (parent company of Uniqlo), said, “For the past 25 years, Korea had never been successful in boycotting Japan, and again this time, it will also end up as a simple incident.” Moreover, he had spoken that “It will not affect the sales for a long period.”

Undeniably, for the past 25years, South Korea had not shown any impressive outcomes from boycotting Japan. There have been several Japan boycotts due to the skewed history textbook issue, Dokdo sovereignty issue, and the sexual slave issue, but it was not successful as expected. Then what could be the key method to lead Japan boycott to success?Bang hee Kim, the head of the life research institute, gave a solution to the question. “The most effective method is to simply not visit Japan.”

According to Mr.Kim, excluding Dokyo, the capital city of Japan, 30 percent of the tourists who visit Japan is Korean. The monetary value clearly supports his idea: Japanese tourists spend 2.6 trillion KRW in South Korea while South Korean tourists spend 6.4 trillion KRW in Japan. This data presents that multiple cities in Japan would highly depend on Korean tourist. Therefore this data also presents that not visiting Japan would be the method of threatening Japan’s public sentiment. The boycott of Japan has many implications beyond economic retaliation. This allows improving the quality of domestic products and a frugal citizen mindset. Moreover, this will also possibly be the chance of paying back Japan for the past 25 years of argument.

Until today, Japan is not giving an apology for what they have done in history. Thus if South Korea turns out to be unsuccessful in boycotting Japan, Japan would continue to deny their misdeeds. It is important to keep the future-oriented view rather than being emotional. South Koreans should take this as an opportunity to strengthen their country.
