Healing Bones with Eggshells?
À̹®Çü °³²Æ÷½ºÆ® Çлý±âÀÚ | ½ÂÀÎ 2019.08.07 02:27

A team of University of Massachusetts Lowell has discovered that eggshells can be used to help grow and heal bones.

According to their research, first, crushed eggshells are inserted into hydrogel. Afterwards, bone cells are pulled out from a patient and mixed with the substance which creates the frame of a growing bone.

The mixture is then cultivated in an incubator, and finally the resulting product is a new bone to be implanted into the patient.Originally, human’s body will try to destroy exterior substances such as eggshells or tissues of different blood-type. However, because the bone cells are used to form synthetic bone, the immune system will not resist on exterior substances as much as it usually does. As the bone cells transplant, the eggshell particles increase the bone cell’s ability to grow and harden when they are mixed into hydrogel mixture. This results in great application in growing cartilage, tendons, and even teeth.
Like human bones, eggshells are mainly comprised of calcium, which is why eggshells were used in the first place.

Calcium is a crucial mineral for growth and strength of a bone, which is why calcium intake is highly advised at a younger age. Not only eggshells, but other bone materials can be utilized with this technique considering its theory. The abundance of eggshells  compared to other bone parts made it an optimal choice as the main material.

The usage of eggshells in medical treatment can benefit the economy and the environment and simultaneously be the sustainable resource. Annually, millions of eggshells are thrown away from households and commercial usage. By reusing the waste products, the technology developed by the UMass Lowell team reduces pollution and global waste. Also, this research paves the way for other breakthroughs of biomedical technology and biomaterials.

The UMass Lowell team includes biomedical engineering and biotechnology Ph.D. candidates: Sanika Suvarnapathaki and Xinchen Wu, and Assistant Professor Gulden Camci-Unai, the leader of the study. Camci-Unai has lead other methods of designing new materials for biomedical engineering before such as creating miniature 3D structures for biomaterial tissue growth.
