The unveiling ceremony of the monument of Choi Jae-Hyung, the godfather of the independence movement, was held at the Choi Jae-Hyung Memorial Hall in Ussuriysk, Russia on August 12th.
The ceremony was co-organized by the Saeeden Church of Korean Foundation for Peace Sharing, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Assembly, and was attended by Ahn Min-Seok, the minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, So Gang-Seok, the chairman of the Korea Foundation for Peace Sharing, Moon Young-sook, the board president of Choi Jae-Hyung Commemoration Service, Li Vladimir, a member of Ussuriysk city council, and Choi Valentin, the grandson of Choi Jae-Hyung.
At the ceremony, ‘A monument of Choi Jae-Hyung’ was built. There were inscribed remembrance statements of key participants to honor Choi Jae-Hyung's noble sacrifice and achievements on the monument.
Choi Jae-Hyung, known as the godfather of the Independence Movement of Primorsky, was an independence activist, a businessman, a journalist and a soldier in there. He established thirty-six schools for the education of Korean compatriots in the area, while he published Korean News for the independence consciousness and promotion of anti-Japanese consciousness, including Daedong Public Information, Haejo Shinmun, and Kwonup Shinmun in media community.
While carrying out patriotic activities, he was killed in April’s Disaster in 1920 by the Japanese military's action. Later, he was posthumously awarded the Order of National Foundation Merit in 1962 in recognition of its contribution to the independence of the Republic of Korea.
독립운동의 대부,최재형 선생 기념비 제막식
-독립운동의 그림자 영웅 최재형-
지난 12일 제74주년 8.15 광복절과 2020년 독립운동가 최재형 선생 순국 100주년을 앞두고 독립운동의 대부 최재형 선생 기념비 제막식이 러시아 우스리스크 최재형 기념관에서 개최됐다.
이날 기념식에서는 ‘연해주 독립운동의 대부 최재형 기념비’가 세워져 의미를 더했다. 건립문에는 최재형 선생의 고귀한 희생과 공적을 기리기 위한 주요 참석자들의 추모글이 새겨졌다.
연해주 독립운동의 대부로 알려진 최재형 선생은 대한민국의 독립운동가 겸 사업가, 언론인, 군인이었다. 일대 한인 동포의 교육을 위해 36개 학교를 설립하여 교육에 앞장섰고, 언론계에서는 대동공보, 해조신문, 권업신문 등 동포들의 독립의식, 항일의식 고취와 계몽을 위한 한인 신문을 간행했다. 이후 러시아 항일 의병 세력을 단결시킨 동의회와 귄업회 등 항일조직을 설립해 안중근 의사의 하얼빈 의거를 돕는 등 수 많은 애국지사를 지원했다.
애국활동을 펼치던 중 1920년 4월 연해주 지역 러시아 혁명세력을 제거하고 한인 독립운동을 말살시키기 위해 일본군이 일으킨 ‘4월 참변’으로 피살됐다.이후 1962년 대한민국 독립에 끼친 공로를 인정받아 건국훈장 독립장이 추서됐다.
이처럼 최재형 선생은 조국 독립을 위해 모든 재산과 목숨까지 바치면서 노블레스 오블리주를 실천한 독립운동가로 평가받고 있다. 또 ‘페치카’(난로)라는 애칭처럼 조선인들에게는 따뜻한 대부였다.
한국사 교수 라영환과 최태성 등 많은 역사학자와 교수들은 “일제 강점기 시대 독립운동가 김구 선생, 윤봉길 의사, 이승만 대통령, 유관순 열사 외 에도 최재형 선생처럼 우리 국민에게는 잘 알려지지 않은 인물들이 많다”며 “광복절을 맞아 최재형 선생과 같은 독립운동가들의 조국을 향한 헌신에 관심을 갖고 독립운동 역사를 되돌아보는 노력이 필요하다”고 당부했다.
